Factors to Consider Before Purchasing an M16a1 Parts Kit

Apart from the kits reviewed here, there are many others on the market. The selection is truly vast. What goes into a good kit? Read on to find out.

Proper-Looking Lower and Upper

Of course, it is possible to deliver a passably fake retro build by using some original or reproduction furniture on a gun, but a true master knows you need a proper looking A1 lower and upper.

Ideally, these two crucial parts should be made from customized forgings and machined to very exact standards. Since there are some substantial design differences between the M16A1 and the M16A2, and later guns, it is of paramount importance to start with correct castings that replicate these period parts.

Check the Legality

Using some M-16 Parts to replace AR-15 parts does not render your rifle a fully automatic one. It will be illegal if you replace AR-15 parts with M-16 parts unless you have the necessary paperwork. We advise speaking with an ATF representative on how to obtain the respective legal documentation to be able to own a fully automatic firearm.

Differences Between Weapon Platforms

The major construction and cosmetic differences between later A2 platforms and the old M16A1 carry forward to modern AR-15 receivers. The A1 pattern lowers have no structural reinforcement that is otherwise needed to prevent failure when used with grenade launchers, and also to hinder cracking around the pivot pin area.

The absence of a brass deflector is the most notable difference between an A1 and A2 upper.

There are some other, less major differences between the various uppers and lowers. While quite a few gun owners might miss upper and lower receiver differences, it is impossible to mistake M16A1 outfitting. The classic triangular hand guard clearly indicates retro styling and identifies the rifle immediately.

Another notable, evident difference is the teardrop-shaped forward assist, which is dramatically different from the modern forward assist design.

We also recommend getting a 20 round AR-15 magazine because there was a mix of 20 and 30 round magazines around after the A1 variant of the M16 was adopted. Original Colt magazines can be found, but they are becoming more and more expensive. There are lots of authentic replicas on the market.

While you are looking for a period magazine, you should shop around for a period sling as well. Fortunately, these are rather affordable.

Putting an M16A1 Together

It’s not difficult to assemble an M16A1 replica. The assembly is pretty much the same as that of a modern AR-15. There are no major differences in key parts, just minor cosmetic, design, and structural issues.

You’ll be prepared for what needs to be done if you’ve ever put an AR-15 together from scratch. On the other hand, it is easy enough to find a local gunsmith or even another gun owner who can help you out with this for a reasonable fee if you are not comfortable assembling a rifle from M16A1 parts kits.

The standard M16A1 barrel is a 1:12 twist, 20” chrome lined barrel with a rifle-length gas system, an A1 flash hider, and front sight tower. A replica is ready for an A1 flash hider and a gas tube.

It is possible to combine all these parts to create a period-correct gun barrel that will be precise and accurate with standard 55-grain ammo. After all, precision may be more important than having a correct rifle. Ideally, you would need both.

We suggest adding an M-7 bayonet while you’re at the barrel. You can buy new production M7s, but you can also get good, original bayonets with a very rich history behind them. They not only add a nice touch to your rifle, but also really take you back to the Vietnam War with your retro build.

Video Review Of Best Gun Cleaning Kit

Things You Must Know Before Buying a Gun Cleaning Kit

Just because a product looks good on the face of it does not mean it is the best choice for you. The same is true for gun cleaning kits. There are many different factors to consider prior to choosing a cleaning equipment for your gun(s).

Gun Compatibility

As a gun owner, you know that firearms come in all different shapes and sizes. Each rifle, pistol, or shotgun has a specific barrel size. For instance, a .45 Magnum features a large barrel compared to a 12mm pistol. What’s more, the same shotgun model may have varied barrel lengths.

Since the firearms are differently sized, the cleaning kits designed for those weapons come in different sizes likewise. While some kits are designed specifically to accommodate one or a handful of guns, others are compatible with guns of all calibers and sizes. So, be sure to check the fine print of the cleaning kit to find out which guns it can be used for.

Amount and Type of Items

Gun cleaning kits may come with the different number of items. While some are intended for basic gun cleaning and hence have a smaller number of items included, others are fully equipped with plenty of different pieces. Keep in mind that gun cleaning kits with more items typically cost more.

The following is the list of the common items that come with a gun cleaning kit:

  • Nylon brush
  • Bronze brush
  • Double-end brushes
  • Cleaning swab
  • Slotted patch holder
  • Cleaning patches
  • Cleaning jag
  • Cleaning rods
  • Oil or other lubricants
  • Chemical solvents
  • Bore snake

Maybe you don’t need all these things. Yet, many gun owners like to have so many different cleaning items at their disposal.

Tool Quality

It pays to spend a little more on a cleaning kit that is made of high-quality materials and performers its job just fine.

The best gun cleaning kits come with brushes and rods made of bronze and carbon fiber, respectively. That’s because those materials are highly durable and ideal for any gun cleaning purpose.

Carrying Case

Chances are you won’t get the top-of-the-line carrying case with your kit as that’d considerably raise the price. If you don’t like the box or case that’s delivered with your cleaning kit, then consider upgrading it. Many people purchase the carrying cases separately and use them for either range shooting or traveling.

Aside from the quality concerns, many cases also do not provide enough room for additional tools or items such as CLP, cleaning jag, mops, lubricants, etc.

Our Final Review

It’s not easy to determine which gun cleaning kit is the best choice because each of them has unique features that set it apart from the rest.

We’ve wanted to take a lot of factors into account when selecting the top 5 gun cleaning kits that worth the money indeed.

They all can do the same thing — clean your gun and ensure that it is always is in perfect working order.

When choosing a gun cleaning equipment, it usually boils down to what types of guns you have.

Of course, you should also take into consideration the factors mentioned in our buyer’s guide. That’s going to help you make a purchase according to your real needs.

Things To Look For In A Tomahawk

When selecting your next tomahawk, there are few features that you should be looking into.

There a wide variety of tomahawks out there on the market. They’re all made from different materials, they come in various sizes, or they just have different equipment attached to them or even as a part of their core body design.

Before we dive into these recommended features, it’s important to note that not all of these features are a necessity or requirement that every tomahawk must have.

These are simply recommendations. At the end of the day, you need to pick the best tactical tomahawk that meets all of your own personal needs.

So now that we have that out of the way, let’s break these down into three categories:

Quality Of Material

cold steel tomahawkThe quality of material that your tomahawk is made from is going to be the biggest area that you need to be concerned with. Your tomahawk must be durable. If not you can forget about using it to hunt prey, reach walls, or to even chop up basic pieces of wood.

Most tactical tomahawks are built from a variety of materials. Most commonly the core of the body is made from either 440 steel or 420hc Steel.

The material that the handle is made from is important.  Equally as important as the material that the body is made from.

There is nothing worse than trying to chop wood to stay warm in freezing weather, only to have your handle snap on you, leaving you helpless.

Try to find a tactical tomahawk that has solid grip construction and preferably with some G10 scales. And if it looks like the bolts are loose or will become loose with minimal use, spring for something that uses heavy-duty bolts on the handle.

And what’s even worse than that is if you’re stuck in a really bad situation and the head of your tomahawk isn’t durable enough to withstand whatever task may be in front of you and it breaks, chips or otherwise fails in the process.

When this happens, you are just pretty much out of luck. Unless you have a spare or feel like getting creative.

The best way to test out the quality of your tomahawks build is to put it through some minor stress testing to see what it can take. This is done by actually trying to chop a log with the blade or puncture something with the spike. If you notice any indentations in the metal, it’s time to find another tomahawk.

Another test for quality assurance is the “wobble” test. A “wobble” happens when the grips do not sit flush or your handle bolts are loose, or the frame moves around a little too freely. When this happens, you will surely feel it when you go to swing or hit something with your tomahawk.

All said, the quality of the material that your tomahawk is made from can make a night and day difference.

Size

The second thing that you should be concerned with when purchasing the best tactical tomahawk is what size tomahawk you actually need.

There may be times when you’re working in cramped conditions and have very little space to utilize a large tool. For these situations, you will probably want something just a bit on the smaller side.

On the other hand, there may be situations that you face that may require something larger to get the job done and you have more room to work with a larger tool.

Size matters when it comes to purchasing any survival tool. Especially when it comes to purchasing a swinging tool or a chopping tool such as a tomahawk.

Choose the size that’s not only easy to carry, but also works in a variety of conditions and situations. Or better yet, tailor your tomahawk for a specific situation that you’re going to be going into.

Extra Features

Lastly, many tomahawks have other tools or extra features that are either built directly into them or attached to them.

Some of them feature spikes on the reverse side of the axe head. This is a tool that can be used for doing things like puncturing metal pipes or walls. If there isn’t a spike on the reverse of the axe, make sure to bring a quality tactical knife with you as well. Other tomahawks have extended pommels that feature a glass breaking tool on the butt end.

Sometimes these extra features may be trivial or not necessary at all. Whereas in other situations, you may absolutely want to have those extra features on your tomahawk. Once again just as in the case of finding an appropriately-sized tomahawk, finding one that has the features that you need, just really boils down to personal preference.
